| Practices | Open Water Swim | Are There Swim Meets? | Who are the Reston Masters? The Reston Masters Swim Team (RMST) is an adult
swim team based in Reston, Virginia and operates under the Potomac Valley Local Masters Swimming
Committee which is part of United
States Masters Swimming (USMS).
We meet regularly for swim practice to improve swimming technique, endurance, and overall
fitness. A small but growing group of swimmers participate
in USMS-sanctioned swim meets and our many triathlete members
train together. Who Can Join?Anyone age 18 or over who is interested in swimming can join the Reston Masters. You can practice with us when you are 18, but you have to be 19 or older to compete.
You must know how
to swim, though it doesn't matter how well. We welcome all levels of competitive and fitness swimmers. Just come to any of our practices. You can try out 2 practices for free. If you like it, let us know and we'll sign you up! NOTE: All visitors and prospective members must sign an insurance waiver or already be a member of USMS before joining a practice. I Love It! How Can I Join?Joining RMST couldn't be simpler! The insurance waiver you signed doubles as the RMST membership application, so you just have to pay annual USMS and quarterly RMST fees.
If you join after the quarter begins, your fees will be pro-rated. If you are not already a USMS memeber, initial fees include an annual USMS membership fee (which will also be pro-rated, if necessary). All practices are supervised by experienced coaches and are covered by
USMS insurance. Everybody swims the same practice, but distances
and intervals are adjusted for the swimmers' abilities.
Swimmers are separated by ability level. There are 3 levels with 2 lanes swimming each level (more outdoors
in an 8 lane pool). Usually one of the 2 lanes is faster than
the other, but all swimmers are generally able to swim the same distances
and intervals. The RMST philosophy is that everyone
is an adult. You can work as hard or as easy as you want to, as long as you don't interfere with other swimmers in your lane. See the Pool Rules for general practice etiquette. Each year on the Sunday of Memorial Day
weekend, the Reston Masters run the Jim
McDonnell Memorial 1- and 2-Mile Swim in Lake Audubon, Reston, VA. This is the Reston Masters' annual marquee event. You can register to swim or volunteer to help by emailing the Lake Swim Director before the event.
Yes you can! RMST swimmers compete in many meets throughout the year, regardless of your skill level. Go to our Competitions page for a list of past and future meets.
